When studying computer networks, one must consider the main elements that will compromise the computer network. The main elements that must be considered will be presented below:

1. Message: the message is a generic term that scribes the data to be transmitted. It can be email, webpage, user call, instant message, or any other forms. The message is generated by the end user that needs to make the transmission. This message will be fed to the network later.

Generally, the message is generated using software installed on computer. For example, if the message is email, it will be generated by email programs such as outlook. Also if the message is a web page request, it will be generated by a browser such as internet explorer. It can also be generated by a chatting program is it represents a call by the user.

2. Medium: the medium is the transmission path over which the data will be transmitted. Is is used to connect the end user with the network device or to connect the network devices with each other.

Computer Networking Education – Career Options

The field of computer networking includes a number of specialized areas for students to study. Students can train for the area that interests them most through an accredited school or college. With an educational program students can earn a variety of degrees including an associates, bachelors, masters, and doctorates level degree. Students can pursue the degree that meets their individual career goals.

With an accredited educational training program in computer network engineering students can obtain their degree in as little as two years. Careers in this area include network technician, network control analyst, network services administrator, and more. Coursework will vary depending on the level of degree and desired career. Study may consist of subjects like Unix OS, desktop applications, Microsoft Network OS, HTML, network essentials, and much more. Entry level professionals can earn between $26,000 and $53,000 yearly whereas other levels can earn around $70,500 a year.

Evolution of Computer Networking

Networking computers is combining several independent disciples of science and engineering such as telecommunications, computer science, information technology and/or computer engineering. The computers are connected with each other primarily by means of telecommunication. Telecommunication, in turn, can be run using computers and in both wired and wireless modes. To reach sophisticated technological precisions of devices, including computers, used in building efficient computer networks information technology and computer science have been a booster.

Chronology of evolution of Computer Networking

Even before nineteenth century AD, visual signs are thought to be used in networking. The communication between calculation machines used to be made by passing instructions manually. The development of current day computer networking can be traced back to middle of the past century. Chronologically, it can be described as follows:

September 1940 – Use of a teletype machine by George Stibitz to send instructions for a problem set from his Model at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire to his Complex Number Calculator in New York and receiving return results.

August 1962 – Computer scientist J.C.R. Licklider of Bolt, Beranek and Newman Company formulated and published the concept of linking output systems like teletypes to computers to built “Intergalactic Computer Network”.
